I’ve had a couple of books on my nightstand for over a year and I finally got around to reading them. The first, The Poor Will Be Glad, by Peter Greer and Phil Smith, was published over a year ago. Peter, sorry for not reading and reviewing it earlier! This is a solid book about the power of microfinance in the developing world. It has a balanced combination of theory and practice that few books on this topic possess. A good read and a beautiful book — the photography is abundant and excellent. In fact, I’m surprised Zondervan put so much into the book production; it really is impressive.
The other book is Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. I know, I know … the book came out in 2003 and it’s shameful I haven’t read it until now. But a guy can’t read everything in a timely manner. Once I finally did read it, I wondered why I waited so long. An excellent book about the challenges of poverty and the effort to find a “cure for the world”. Paul Farmer is amazing. Perhaps a bit idealistic at times, but then we need idealism in our world. This is a book well worth reading.
