When I asked about books on hope, my friend Renee suggested Finding Faith in the Dark: When the Story of Your Life Takes a Turn You Didn’t Plan by Laurie Short. And I always listen when Renee offers ideas!
Finding Faith in the Dark is the story of pursuing God in the midst of pain, chaos, and loss. It’s finding hope in all the confusion. We all experience twists and turns in life that we don’t expect. Many of us would readily say, “This isn’t how I planned things to happen…” Laurie has had more than her share of such experiences, and the book reflects the insights earned from it all.
As with my past posts about books on hope, I’m going to let the author speak with a few quotes.
“Hope springs from the fact that our story is never finished until we leave this earth.”
“One of the ways we survive our loss is by looking outside of our own experience to find hope.”
“…the most significant insight we get from the context of Jeremiah 29:11 occurs just before the verse itself. The promise of hope for the future follows a strong encouragement to live in the present.”
“Grace becomes a movement through which hope comes.”
“The hope of new life is the gift of our faith.”
If you are dealing with loss, grief, or just confused about how God is working in your life, this is an encouraging and thoughtful book. The author doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, but embraces the idea that not having all the answers is part of our journey. It’s sometimes exactly where God wants us to so he can be present in our lives.
