What is essential? It’s an age old question, but all the more important in our hurried world. Obviously the answer is different for each person — in my world my wife and family only take a back seat to my relationship with God. Well, they are suppose to anyway. But whatever the personal answer, it’s an important question and one we have to answer….or it will answer itself.
Greg McKeown has dedicated his career to asking and answering this question. His latest book, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, is a much needed counterweight to a world caught up in the myth of “more” stuff, more ambition, more achievement. It’s a great read for anybody who has a multi-tasking life, from full time Mom’s to corporate CEO’s.
I didn’t take away an overriding system or mantra about essentialism, but it sure made me think about where I put my most productive time, energy, and thought. And it made me realize how the essentials in my life can so easily become twisted and confused. Staying focused is key. And when we forget, events can make the decision for us as we grow increasingly unfocused.
This is a great book for any entrepreneur — employed or otherwise — to read and apply. I only wish I took this advice because I have a hard time living a stripped down essential life. I love my life, it’s filled with joy and excitement, but it is all over the map at times. The book reminds me to keep that in check as I also learn to value the joy in what I’m doing.
I think you’ll enjoy it too. Just don’t do like I do and write an nonessential blog about it.
