Death and Judgment, by Donna Leon
Death and Judgment (Commissario Guido Brunetti Mysteries) is the third Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery that I’ve read. Each has been clever, fun, reasonably realistic (for a mystery book), and a lighthearted break from the non-fiction that I usually read. It’s fun to escape to Venice for a few hours and be immersed in Italian culture through the eyes of Commissario Brunetti.
Having said that, this might be the darkest of the three books I’ve read. The conclusion is frustrating and the crime is particularly hideous. As usual when you read an older book (this was originally published in 1995), there are curiosities to the storyline that make it feel dated. The excitement over the computer modem, for instance.
Despite these concerns, it is still a first rate murder mystery book. A great summer read. Oh, and kudos to Leon for raising the topic of human trafficking at a time when that issue was barely on the radar.
