"The Sisters of Sinai", by Janet Soskice
Amazon recommended this book based on my reading habits, and it was an interesting storyline. Twin sisters from Scotland, devout Presbyterians and amateur intellectuals (and I say that only to mean they never attended college…they were very, very smart) daringly head off to Sinai in search of ancient Biblical manuscripts. To the amazement of all, they find something that has a profound impact on the academic community and faith itself. They discovered one of the oldest manuscripts of the four Gospels in the ancient Syriac language.
I enjoyed this book. It’s not great — the writer can be longwinded and there’s a certain upper class English feel to the whole book. But the story is great. I found myself cheering the two women on as they battled gender bias, the upper class snobbishness of the day, the arrogance of the academic community, and the sheer rigor of travel through the Sinai.
It’s a forgotten story, so I’m thankful that the author has retold it in a thorough way.
