Somebody recently asked me where I buy wine, and with the weekend here I thought I’d share my favorite secret tip.
First, obviously I love shopping at wine shops, my favorite being The Wine Steward in Pleasanton. Sometimes I buy at the wineries themselves if they happen to have something extraordinary. And I’m a member of four different wine clubs (Justin, Biale, Pear Valley, and Fisher).
But lately I’ve also been buying through Invino, which is an online retailer. You get daily emails with the specials of the day, and they are often very good deals. Sometimes they are great deals!
I love the selection — everything from Bordeaux to Australia to Napa to Chile. They have $10 wines and $1000 wines, they have hard to find classics and bottles you uncork with pizza. Their service has been great, with shipping being on time and affordable. It’s a nice mix of hard to fine wines, every day wines at good prices, things you want to keep for a few years before drinking, and new discoveries.
One of the fun things is that they post information about a wine and set the clock ticking. When the sale is done, it’s done. They sell out fast on the really good stuff (or the true bargains). So the inventory is constantly revolving and new options are coming forward all the time. It’s a bit like Groupon that way.
