One of the great things I’ve discovered about a blog is discovering the themes in my heart and mind. Different patterns become evident after four years of Junkyard Wisdom updates. Maybe patterns isn’t the right word; seeing the long threads that weave through a tapestry and build upon each other might be a better way to understand it.
One of the key discoveries is my interest in the tensions of life — the opposite pulls that are both equally good but heading in opposite directions. And perhaps my biggest tension of all has been the value of creating wealth and the importance of engaging the poor. The two are not mutually exclusive, of course. But keeping them in balance is like walking along a narrow path in the dark; it is easy to stray.
That’s why I was excited when Silicon Valley Fellowship invited me to speak on the topic. This group of young business leaders are passionate about exploring the intersection of faith and work. They host events featuring business leaders who share their story, and they graciously invited me to speak at their December 12 event in San Francisco.
I look forward to sharing a few thoughts about the balance of hope and despair in the world, and why we need to be as comfortable at a black tie event as a remote village council meeting. Or, as I have said before, equally uncomfortable!
