My son has always been a tinkerer. We still laugh about his childhood dream of wanting to build an airplane in our backyard. I pointed out we had no tires for the plane to land with and he said, “They sell tires at Costco.” I pointed out we had no engine, which stumped him for a little while, and then he said, “We have one in Mom’s car.”
Stubborn, focused, no problem was too large to solve … he had the perfect internal hard wiring to be an inventor. And tinker he did, from Legos to woodshop to photography to bicycles to cars to computers.
So it was only a mild surprise when a few months ago, at the age of 27, he sat down to dinner with us and said, “Hey, did you see what I built?” He pulled out the first prototype of Ember. D’Aun and I just stared at first. Wait, we thought, you MADE this? When? How? Since when did you have the skills to design products for the iPhone? You’re an English major for gawdsakes!
But there it was. A little black case that easily slipped onto the back of an iPhone and became the finest camera flash you could imagine. It was perfect for anybody wanting to use their phone for night photography. And Jedd, who is a popular Instagramer, knew just what people wanted.
Well, that little black case eventually became a white one. And it went through a few more technical changes, always becoming just a bit better. Then Jedd brought in a couple of friends to help with the business and marketing side.
And now it’s ready for the world. Kickstarter agreed to post it on their website and the goal is to raise $30,000 in the next month so Ember can get into full production. It’s an amazing product and one that a lot of people are going to want.
Can you help them out? Visit Ember’s Kickstarter page and send in your support. You’ll receive some nice perks — including one of the first Embers built!
