Last week I played golf with Dave Lomas of Reality SF (thanks Madsen for setting that up). Now normally this wouldn’t be a big deal because I meet pastors all the time. But Dave has published his first book and it’s well worth sharing here (besides, he’s a helluva golfer and kicked my butt on my home course, which he had never played).
The Truest Thing about You: Identity, Desire, and Why It All Matters captures the essence of our spiritual journey with Christ. As Dave says, there are many true things about you. We all have ways to identify ourselves: man, woman, parent, spouse, gay, straight, beautiful, athletic, successful, failure, funny, smart, etc etc. Even if we don’t use these words (let’s face it — not many of us answer “smart” when asked to describe ourselves) we still build our self-awareness around these as truths.
But Lomas points out that these might be true descriptions of us, but they are not the truest things about us. The truest thing about us, Lomas says, is that we are beloved by God. We are made in the image of God. All our self-descriptions might be true, but they are woefully inadequate and perhaps even delusional if we do not place our identity in Christ. And it is time for us to move beyond our lesser trues and focus on the truest of truths.
I’m not explaining this nearly as well as Dave does in the book. But then that’s why he wrote the book — to present this simple but brilliant insight in a way we can all comprehend it. So I encourage you to buy a copy and check it out. You’ll be glad you did.
