I’m sitting in the restaurant of the Bull Frog Inn, Belmopan, Belize. It’s a great place to buy a diet coke and get free wireless.
The downside? They play a local radio station that is addicted to Taylor Swift.
Another curious thing about the radio station is they periodically broadcast eulogies of local people who have passed. It’s a small town, so it’s a short list, and it’s all rather quaint. Sweet, actually.
One thing consistent in all the eulogies is how they describe what the deceased leaves behind. It’s never a list of jobs, possessions, or worldly achievements. It’s family. Always family. From “a handsome son” to “six great grandchildren” to “a devoted husband”, the eulogies define a person by those who were closest to them.
Your eulogy is defined by those you love and who love you. Seems obvious, right? Still, it’s a good reminder.
And it almost makes up for the incessant Shake it Off. Arrghhhh.
