My friend Ken Wytsma read Junkyard Wisdom and texted, “Let’s do an event in Belize where we host 20 people for a multi-day retreat and talk about the issues in the book.”
I was struck by the idea. So many conversations around stewardship, wealth, and poverty tend to be held at fancy hotels. But there’s something odd about spending $500 a night for a hotel room so you can talk about how to serve our neighbor. Hosting an event in the rainforest, near villages where people live on just a few hundred dollars a year, seemed like an excellent counterbalance.
So we put our heads together, wrote a curriculum, planned a schedule, and created Junkyard Wisdom: Belize. If you’ve read the book and find some of the ideas and issues resonate with your experience, then you’ll get a lot of out of this event.
It’s not for everyone of course. It’s for those who work with and around wealth, yet want to faithfully follow Christ as they seek to love their neighbors. We will delve into issues ranging from justice, poverty, and the theology of wealth. Plus you will leave with tangible ways to practice what we have discovered, like answering the question “when is enough too much?”
The workshop takes place February 15-19, 2017 at Jaguar Creek. Ken and his wife Tamara will join D’Aun and me in leading the event. Check out the website for details and the itinerary for our time together. It’s a good blend of study, conversation, exploration, relaxation, and challenge. At least we think it is!
There’s only room for 16 people, and we’re over 30% full already. If interest exceeds capacity, I’ll take applications (or bribes…I do like Napa Cab, hint hint). Take a look at the details on the website, clear your calendar, and let us know soon.
