When two dozen people go to the Belize rainforest to discuss wealth and justice, while also spending their evenings talking about seemingly insolvable issues like Middle East peace or child exploitation, it’s either going to be an amazing experience or an absolute explosion of entrenched opinions and logistical challenges.
Thankfully, no doubt in large part because of your prayer, it was an amazing experience.
The second annual Junkyard Wisdom Belize went off without any logistical challenges, thank God.
More importantly, the people who came had a wide range of opinions and perspectives, but a shared love for God and neighbor. Thus the conversations were meaningful, respectful, and thoughtful.
Last year we had a number of 30-somethings on the trip, and this year it was an older group. Unsurprisingly the conversations were different. Last year there was interest in how to be intentional about justice, philanthropy, and even parenting. This year the group was more focused on transition — how can we move from success to significance, as Lloyd Reeb might ask.
There were healthy conversations about finding purpose in our time, treasure, and talent. Reflecting the interests of successful people who wanted to find the best way to honor God, these conversations always revolved around servanthood and humility. It was incredibly encouraging.
Of course, there were also times of intense laughter, deep joy, and unexpected insights. These moments were the result of the trust and respect within the group. And why wouldn’t there be such trust and respect when so many smart, spiritually deep, and highly engaged people with tremendous wit were in the group? One couldn’t help but laugh or cry, often at the same time.
Twenty-three people flew home (or off to their next adventure) as new best friends. All are committed to serving God in amazing ways. Knowing there will be fruitful results from their work simply adds to my desire for a third annual event.
But we shall see. Right now it just feels good to rest, reflect, and be thankful.
