Unless you faithfully have read this blog for the past 7-years, you have probably never heard the word Freestarter™. And you might be asking why the ™ attached to it.
It all started when I was trying to describe what I meant by the phrase “lead, follow, or go your own way” in this 2011 post. I made the word up in an attempt to describe how I approach decisions because it doesn’t quite fit into normal definitions of “leader or follower.” A freestarter™ is not exactly an entrepreneur, and not always an artist, and not entirely a prophet. A freestarter™ just sees things differently and then acts on it, rarely with any concern about whether others follow.
And why the ™ attached to it? Because I wrote a chapter about freestarters™ in my next book, Salvaged, which comes out in 2019. It dawned on me how funny it would be to have a trademark attached to the name, so we’re applying for one! And of course if it really does take off (highly doubtful) I can make bajillions on the royalties (in case you haven’t noticed, I can be sarcastic).
I put this page together to describe more about freestarters™ and list some of my favorite people who fit this description. It’s not complete, obviously. And the people on the list are not full time freestarters™ anymore than a prophet spends the day constantly predicting the future. Gotta stop and have a beer sometimes, right?
Hopefully I can add more people to the list as I meet them. Truth is I could add more now, but didn’t want to make the list extremely long. If you have ideas about who should be there, please let me know. A key differentiator is I have to know them (unless they are dead).
