In case you haven’t heard, my second book Salvaged, Leadership Lessons Pulled From the Junkyard will be released in January. Or maybe January-ish. The book has really come together in the last couple of months, with several exciting developments.
Most exciting — at least for me — is Bob Goff has agreed to write the foreword! Bob and I have known each other for half a century now, but it still amazes me how generous he is with his time. And the foreword came out great. Quintessential Bob Goff: funny, transparent, honest, and insightful all at once.
We also saw the first draft of the cover for Salvaged, and it’s fantastic. I’m very happy with it. It has a touch of whimsy mixed with a little grittiness, and it should definitely stand out in a bookstore or online. But I can’t share it yet, sorry!
Collecting endorsements has been a kick because it has allowed me to reach out to old friends. Catching up with them over lunch, emails, and phone calls has been an unexpected side benefit. I’m thankful for their generous encouragement.
Reading and re-reading the book revealed a few weak points. Taking the perspective, “How would ____ react to this?” pushes me to think more deeply about some of my flippant lines. Input from Brenda Salter-McNeil, Jennifer Hollingsworth, D’Aun and others has really helped.
Over the past month the manuscript has been improved by the copy editor. There were a few things we disagreed on — who knew you could have so many conversations about “the” being in the right place? But for the most part it was a simple and helpful process. The copy editor, Elizabeth, even had such a funny line I quoted her in a footnote!
It shouldn’t surprise you to hear there are still a few edgy lines in the book. We shall see if they get past the final editor. Cross your fingers.
There is also all the marketing to be done. Want to host a Salvaged signing party? Or interested in having me speak at an event? Let me know and we can see if the timing works. Any creative ideas for marketing a book about junkyard leadership? Let me know!
For now, stay tuned for more updates. Thanks!
