A lot is made about Jesus sneaking off to pray alone. Different people have different takes on this, including the obvious commitment to prayer Jesus displayed. But honestly, for all we know he played video games and came back refreshed. Okay, so that’s unlikely, but are you denying something is impossible around Jesus? Didn’t think so.
Later this summer my family is heading to Lake Tahoe for a break. I wonder what Jesus would do if he was there with us (and don’t get all spiritually uptight and lecture me about him being with us in spirit – I’m blocking anyone who thinks this is the least bit insightful).
Presumably he’d go fishing and BBQ something by the lake. Or bring his woodworking tools to finish a project. Which books would he likely bring to read? I’m betting a good Agatha Christie mystery. My friends are looking for a fourth when we golf — you think Jesus would bring clubs? I doubt he’d check his email. Even less likely he’d post pictures of the vacation on Instagram.
We aren’t packing enough food for the crowds he’d attract so hopefully he would keep a low profile. Or maybe he’d take my daughter’s homemade sourdough bread and feed everyone. I tell you one thing — I’m definitely not packing wine for this trip with Jesus around an entire lake of freshwater (rumor has it he used seawater to make Pinot Noir).
Silly? Well, yes of course (Jesus would never bother with Pinot).
But it’s also very real. Jesus did real human things. Well, maybe not the golfing. But he took time to stop, relax, and recharge.
I’m going to do the same. But with more sunscreen.
See you in a few weeks!
