This book, Junkyard Wisdom Advent: Authentic, Daily Devotions About the Human, Humorous, and Sometimes Messy Side of the Advent Story, is largely in print because of your support. I’ll explain why.
A few years ago I was playing around with an idea for a devotion series. What if, I thought, devotions weren’t so wimpy? What if they weren’t so filled with clichés and had more grit? What if they were stories that wrestled with unanswerable questions as they explored the untold portions of the Christmas story? And what if they were deeply rooted in the human side of the bible stories many of us know so well?
Most devotions I’ve read are either as sappy as a greeting card or so deeply theological that I couldn’t get my head around them. We needed something in between. We needed something an old junkyard guy could understand, even if it did push the boundaries a little.
And thus was born the first series of Advent devotions. To my surprise, 8,000 people signed up! Then it grew to 25,000 for an Easter series. Over time it has grown to nearly twice that.
When you signed up for these devotions, it gave me a platform (a much-treasured thing in the publishing world). Thankfully I have never worried about such things as platforms. God has blessed me, and I’ve not had to turn a profit from these devotions, so the number of readers didn’t matter much to me (other than the obvious ego boost!).
But as more people signed up, and more people wrote to say how much they loved the devotions, an Advent book just made sense.
So yes, by signing up, opening those emails, reading them, and writing to say how much you liked, loved, or hated them, you made a book possible.
Thank you! Now go order your copy. Please?
