The world renowned theologian looked at me, clearly suspicious of my sanity, much less credibility. I smiled, handed him a copy of my Advent book, and said, “I hope you have a sense of humor.”
Which, it turns out, he did. The fight at the ice cream stop on the way to Bethlehem was his favorite.
In a few days my Easter devotions begin, and I hope you have a sense of humor. Obviously, there is nothing funny about the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, and Holy Week contains many serious events.
But the Junkyard Wisdom™ devotions tell stories about what might have happened, and bonus points if the stories are humorous and human. Thus there are a few jokes and some very human moments in this series. Bonus, the famous donkey I invented, Sully, who carried Mary to Bethlehem, returns 30-some years later. (Spoiler alert: he carries Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.)
Yes, the series invents details. But overall it stays true to the traditional Easter story, even if I prod a few sacred cows to get out of the way. I’m using storytelling to help expand our perspective on what might have happened and what it might mean.
So I’ll say to you what I said to the theologian, “I hope you have a sense of humor.”
It begins on Saturday, April 12, with an opening welcome email. Thanks for subscribing!
Not sure who created the hilarious image for this blog post, but it’s hilarious. Thank you.
