PathLight Students

This is cool. Here’s a photo of twenty new PathLight students! These kids come from three villages in Belize, all of them underprivileged communities. The students dream of a different life, one that embraces spiritual, social, and intellectual rigor.

Okay, so they would never express it that way … they are only about 14-years old! But some day I hope they can and will say it that way. My dream for them is their dream for themselves: to embrace life and fully understand the potential that exists within their hearts, minds, and souls. Won’t that be cool when it happens!…

What an amazing year it has been for PathLight!

PathLight has had an amazing year. There really is no other way to say it. Amazing. And I wanted to share a few highlights.

Another seventeen PathLight students have graduated from high school. All seventeen have applied to college – an amazing accomplishment for these young men and women!

The school year went well with after-school tutoring and weekly discipleship classes for the students. The students attended several special events, such as a weekend workshop led by Brenda Salter-McNeil, the YC Belize youth conference, and a fantastic grad party for the graduating seniors!

There are 60 students in the program …

Prayer Request Update

A few days ago I asked for your prayers as PathLight selected which students would be accepted into the sponsorship program. It was great to see 17 students graduate a few weeks ago, but now it is time to select a new class of students.

I wanted to post this quick update to say that 20 students were selected today. There will be five students from St. Margaret’s, seven from Armenia, and eight from Cotton Tree.

Now we can start praying for the class of 2016!…

Prayer Request

Last week in Belize was amazing. Seventeen PathLight students graduated from the local high school! It was great to see the PathLight students dominate the list of academic awards (even though only 17 of the 57 graduates were in the PathLight program).
A few days later something equally amazing happened. PathLight distributed applications to the 8th Grade students to begin the process of selecting the next incoming class. It was an amazing response, with 68 students sending in their applications! That’s a huge number, larger than any response PathLight has had before.

To put it in perspective, the entire PathLight …

What Teacher Influenced Your Life?

Last week I saw the difference that a talented and dedicated teacher can make. Brenda Salter-McNeil, a friend who works to build inter-culturally competent leaders in the Christian community, spent two days working with the PathLight sponsorship students. It was an amazing weekend!

Along with her colleague Rosanne Swain, Brenda guided the students through a process of discovering their own racial identity. This workshop showed the students how important diversity is and it also reinforced a positive self-image. Based on Biblical principles, and often tracing the story of Esther, the curriculum was truly the integration of faith and learning. …

Jaguar Creek

Nearly twenty years ago we had an idea to create a research and education center in the middle of the Belizean rainforest.  With the help of friends, family, the people of Belize, and of course a large dose of God-induced serendipity, it all came together in 1994.  Since then Jaguar Creek has been used in incredible ways.  Sitting on 700-acres of pristine rainforest, adjacent to another 1200-acres of protected lands and a National Park, it has been like a second home to my family.  Today it is part of the PathLight ministry and serves as a base for educational programs, …
