Family,

A Night Prayer

For my friends who are grieving, a Caim prayer from the book Celtic Daily Prayer:

This night and every night
seems infinite with questions,
and sleep as elusive
as answers.

Pain and longing are always present,
dulled only a little
by the distractions of day.
I am weary; I am weary.
I am confused.

Circle me, Lord.
Keep despair and disillusion without.
Bring a glimmer within.

Circle me, Lord;
keep nightmare without.
Bring moments of rest within.

Circle me, Lord;
keep bitterness without.
Bring an occasional sense
of Your presence within. …

Jedd Has Left for Thailand

Last night I dropped my son Jedd off at the airport and he headed to Thailand for seven weeks. He’s probably still in the air as I post this. D’Aun and I are excited for him, and equally excited for the great footage we’re sure he’ll create for the next SOLD Project video. He’ll be staying with Rachel and Kevin (his sister and brother-in-law), so we know he’s in good hands. We’re going to miss him, though!

There is still a bit of fundraising to do for this trip. Many of you may have received Jedd’s letter asking for support, …

Last Day

Tomorrow I begin my October sabbatical. Or as my friend Ian calls it, my October Jubilee. I’m really looking forward to the partial “digital fast” of no email or voicemail (though I will still write on this blog). I’m also looking forward to unstructured days that allow time for thought, reflection, and prayer.

One of the goals of this break is to recalibrate. I’m not looking for a new job or new spiritual experience. It’s not a “halftime” event. But I do feel the need to stop, rest, create a bit of margin in my life, and spend time without …

Family,

My Son in Thailand

My son, Jedd, is heading to Thailand. I’ve asked him to be a guest blogger and share why he’s going and how you can help. I hope you consider supporting him in this effort because the work he’ll be doing is important. You can do so by visiting his blog, giving through The SOLD Project, or simply sending him a check (contact me for mailing information). Be sure to specify that your support is for Jedd.

Anyway, I’ll let him explain more below:

Family, Random Thoughts,

Once in a lifetime …

There was a time when it was common for me to use the phrase “once in a lifetime.” I seldom use it these days because it’s usually not true. I’d say once in a lifetime about something and then find myself doing it again in a few years. It’s one of those phrases that I’ve cut from my vocabulary.

But this past weekend has made me rethink that. There was a lot of “once in a lifetime” packed into one weekend. D’Aun and I have our friends Mark and Cathy to thank for making that possible; so thank you, Mark …

Family, Goble Properties, Junkyard Management,

New Blog!

Today marks the first day that Junkyard Wisdom has gone live under its own domain. I’m excited about that and eager to add new elements to the blog. Any suggestions?

To start it off, I thought I’d share a fun family photograph of the junkyard. This is an old photo in bad condition, but it strikes a chord with me because it is so…well, it’s so junkyard. I remember seeing my Dad in exactly this pose many times, and I remember the clutter and chaos of the stuff that filled the place. Somebody suggested I have it restored. But I …

Family,

A week of change and loss

Last week was not an easy one. We finalized the sale of Hana, which was frantic and challenging and ultimately disappointing. I didn’t want to sell, but my hand was forced by a combination of the banking crisis and the extreme slowdown in Hawaiian tourism. It will be missed, though many friends in Hana will still be close to my heart.

D’Aun lost her uncle. He was in his 80’s, lived a long and productive life, and was what one might call the “salt of the earth” type. A good man, a farmer, a tough Texan. He had been struggling …

Family,

Happy Birthday, Mom!

My Mom turns 86 today. What an amazing life she has led, and what an amazing woman she is. Thought I’d share just a few thoughts about her.

Every week I take Mom to church. She’s not always up for it, and I’m not always in town, but we still go often. And whatever church we attend, be it our regular church home or visiting another church, somebody comes up to my Mom and says, “Dee Goble! Do you remember me? I was in your bible study back in….” They usually then launch into a story about that bible study …
