Family,

The SOLD Project

My daughter is Executive Director for The SOLD Project, and they just released this new short video. Well worth watching, and definitely worthy of a response. Go to www.thesoldproject.org and help them!

Family,

The Single Life…for two weeks

D’Aun left for Thailand on January 9th and I’ve been “home alone” since then. Well, partly alone. I always have Sadie around to bark at strangers. But essentially, I’ve had the longest run of bachelorhood since 1981. It started fun but I’m done with it. Looking forward to having D’Aun home!

I thought you’d enjoy a few reflections about being single for two weeks….

First of all, I notice that I can sit down in more places. D’Aun views chairs as storage shelves. Anything at roughly knee high is fair game for holding purses, boxes, mail, coats, items to be …

Zealous Love

Okay, so here is a book everybody should read. I don’t say that often, and I guess I’m overstating it here to make a point, but this really is an excellent read.

Mike & Danae Yankoski, friends of mine and former PathLight volunteers, have put together a “practical guide to social justice.” And indeed it is.   Zealous Love is a unique collection of short articles on human trafficking, unclean water, refugees, hunger, education, environment, HIV/AIDS, and inequality.

The list of writers is simply outstanding…but of course my favorite is my own daughter, Rachel! Well done, honey! Also in the …

Family, Random Thoughts,

Books for the Year

Friend of mine (Kelly) asked what my favorite top five books of the year were. Then somebody else asked me the same thing. Then another person. Okay, I get the message.

Problem is, it’s difficult to list just five. And it’s even more difficult to figure out how to rate them. One book might be beautifully written, while another less so but far more thought provoking. And it’s hard to compare fiction with, say, a book of history. Even though I tend to read books that focus on either contemporary trends or history, I try to diversify. Once a month …

Family,

Thanksgiving

My mother is one of those people who has every right to complain.  She’s 85-years old and her body is wearing out.  She needs a walker to get around these days.  She has macular degeneration that has taken most of her eyesight.  For a person who loves to read, loves to bird watch, and loves to watch TV….blindness is particularly painful.  The hardest part, the most difficult thing she has lived through, is losing her daughter (my older sister) to cancer about 3-years ago.  I know she’s struggled with depression in the past, though it never incapacitated her.  It’s amazing …

Family,

My Parents Are Aliens!

About 15-years ago, D’Aun and I read “Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus.”  It was a fun read because it helped us understand how differently we communicate.  I enjoyed it because it pointed out the differences without condemning either side.

After school one day, Jedd, who at the time was probably 8-years old,  was with D’Aun when they came by my office.  Jedd focused on his homework as D’Aun finished up some paperwork.  During their stay, D’Aun and I mis-communicated about something.  After a bit of frustration in trying to get our points across to each other, I …

Belize, Family, PathLight,

Belize Videos

PathLight is working on several videos right now. Hope to have one that will provide a broad understanding of the work PathLight is doing, another one that focuses on the teacher training program, and then a series on each of the sponsorship students. Here is the original draft video done by my son, Jedd, several months ago. It’s not a finished product and was primarily used as a way to round out ideas for the final version.…

Family,

Heritage Service

My mother is 85-years old now, nearly blind, and uses a walker to get around.  Despite all that, she’s still a spiritual force.  Her prayer life is dynamic, and her understanding of Scripture is unbelievable.  She cannot read Scripture anymore, but she continues to learn and grow in her understanding by listening.

This morning, as a change of pace, I took her to the Heritage Service at Cornerstone Church.  Normally we attend CrossWinds, which has contemporary music.  My mom tolerates this, but it’s not really her cup of tea.  So the change to an older style worship seemed like something …
