Competition

I’ve been thinking a lot about competition lately.  We compete in business, politics, global affairs, sports, and even in many personal pursuits (I know people who live in angst because they have fewer twitter followers than a competitor).  Competition can be good because it can bring out the best in us, but other times it can be ugly and harmful.  The trick is knowing how to manage our competitive instincts.

One easy junkyard tip to share on this is to first identify who your competition is.

A recent conversation had me thinking about how our competitive natures can interfere with …

The Conclusion of the Matter

So it’s over. The month of October flew by fast and my sabbatical break from work and ministry is finished. A few folks have asked how I feel about that, and I must say that it is good to be back at work. Loved the break, but I’m eager to reengage with the many fun things that I have going.

Would I do some things differently? Yes, of course. The email fast was just a bit too long to be pragmatic. No fast on web surfing was a mistake. Next time I want D’Aun more involved, and next time it’s …

The House of the Lord

My month long break begins today. Hallelujah!

For the last month and for the month to come, I’ve been working through prayers and readings in the book “Celtic Daily Prayer”. The Morning Prayer begins like this:

One thing I have asked of the Lord,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life;
to behold the beauty of the Lord
and to seek Him in His temple.

This comes from Psalm 27:4. I love this start because it expresses the foundation of this sabbatical month. Dwelling in the …

Last Day

Tomorrow I begin my October sabbatical. Or as my friend Ian calls it, my October Jubilee. I’m really looking forward to the partial “digital fast” of no email or voicemail (though I will still write on this blog). I’m also looking forward to unstructured days that allow time for thought, reflection, and prayer.

One of the goals of this break is to recalibrate. I’m not looking for a new job or new spiritual experience. It’s not a “halftime” event. But I do feel the need to stop, rest, create a bit of margin in my life, and spend time without …

Business News

NEWS FLASH!!!  DON’T TRUST BUSINESS NEWS!!!

It amazes me to see the garbage that is portrayed as business news in the media.  This morning I came across the latest silliness.  The headline on a well known website is, “Recovery in danger as firms, homebuyers cut back.”  The article then went on to say that without a boost in spending or hiring, the recovery cannot move forward.

The article immediately below this one was headlined, “Credit card debt drops to lowest level in 8 years.”  The article then went on to explain that Americans were so wildly over their head in …

New Blog!

Today marks the first day that Junkyard Wisdom has gone live under its own domain. I’m excited about that and eager to add new elements to the blog. Any suggestions?

To start it off, I thought I’d share a fun family photograph of the junkyard. This is an old photo in bad condition, but it strikes a chord with me because it is so…well, it’s so junkyard. I remember seeing my Dad in exactly this pose many times, and I remember the clutter and chaos of the stuff that filled the place. Somebody suggested I have it restored. But I …

Socially Responsible Business

The last decade has seen an expansion of the socially responsible business sector. I applaud that expansion … but let me point out a wrinkle that too few people mention.

Hardly any large companies actually practice what they preach. Consumer demand, media attention and government regulation have forced companies to adopt policies and goals that are socially minded, but few of them actually do anything about it. It’s the small businesses that are doing the heavy lifting when it comes to social responsibility.

Am I being cynical or flippant when I blow off the large corporations who model themselves as …
