An Example of Junkyard Wisdom

My friend David emailed the link to this article and wrote, “This is junkyard wisdom … it’s like the guy is living the book.”

Click the link and you’ll see what he means. A conservative guy in his 60’s has a dim view of the homeless who live near his business. Then he meets one of the guys living on the streets and builds a relationship with him. Guess what? Yep, Junkyard Wisdom kicks in and he sees the world differently. Both of them do, actually.

Read the article. You’ll love it.

Thanks, David, for sending it along.

Living With Wealth Without Losing Your Soul

51o3n0h8mml-_sx322_bo1204203200_Last month I was at a conference in Florida and met the author of Living With Wealth Without Losing Your Soul. The author, Steve Perry, had the interesting experience of marrying his wife without realizing she came from a very wealthy family. He had to completely adjust his thinking — both spiritually and socially — about wealth.

It’s a book that covers a lot of the same themes as Junkyard Wisdom, though with more of a pastoral heart and less of the “global junkyard” messiness I embrace. Where Junkyard Wisdom tells the story of one who strives to …

God Only Knows What Will Happen

There’s a point in Junkyard Wisdom when I describe three steps for being successful:

  1. Start by making friends with people different than yourself.
  2. Then keep doing that your whole life.
  3. God only knows what will happen.

Seems silly, doesn’t it? No strategic plan? No analysis of the big challenges we face? No StrengthsFinder test or Myers Briggs exam? How could this possibly be a plan for being successful? How could this possibly change the world?

But it is. It’s part of what God designed. It’s the Church.

We are called to love each other. When Jesus was asked who our …

John Ortberg Interview

Author, teacher, and all around good guy John Ortberg wrote the foreword of Junkyard Wisdom.  We sat down in his church to talk about the book. Thought you’d enjoy seeing it!

What Jesus Saw in the Widow’s Offering

The story of the Widow’s Offering, found in Mark 12 and Luke 21, never made it into my book Junkyard Wisdom. It’s an amazing story, but I couldn’t find the right spot in the book so it was cut.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the story: Jesus was watching people put money in the temple treasury and noted how the rich gave large sums; then the widow gave two coins, all she had.

Jesus says to the disciples, “…all these people gave out of their wealth, but she out of her poverty.” The Message has it as, “All the …

How You Can Help

So now the book is out and I can relax, right? Well not exactly.

To create sustained credibility, a book needs reviews on Amazon. You know how it is — you hear about a book, go to the Amazon page, and see that nobody has reviewed it, or just 2-3 people have. And you think, “Huh, well, maybe it’s not such a big deal after all.”

By contrast, you go to Amazon and see dozens of reviews. Even hundreds. And then you think, “Wow, people must be really engaging with this.” And you buy the book.

That’s the reaction …

So What Are People Saying About Junkyard Wisdom?

I’m way too lazy to do a real book tour. But a blog tour sounds doable!

Maybe you remember the days when authors would go on book tours. They’d show up at the local bookstore to talk or read from their book, sign a few copies, and then head on to the next town. Some still do that.

But the more efficient way is to do a blog tour — a combination of interviews, reviews, conversations, even podcasts, all from the comfort of my computer screen. I get fewer frequent flyer miles, but it’s far easier!

Below are several blogs …
