Journey of Hope

What is hope? The meaning of hope has been on my mind lately, so I’ve decided to think more on the topic in 2015. It seems both healthy and timely.

We live in an era when millions of good things are happening, yet we grow weary with despair. We worry about our broken political system, the rise of extremism, the violence in our schools, the pervasiveness of greed in our culture, the wealth disparity, high taxes, ISIS, the Byzantine health care system, immigration reform, Putin/Russian aggression, measles outbreaks, and out of control social media.

It’s endless what we can find …

Live Simply?

Remember the adage, “Live simply so that others may simply live”? Spoken first by Mahatma Gandhi, or so they say. The line has been around for a long time and was especially popular a decade or more ago. It became the sort of thing often seen on bumper stickers and T-shirts.

You don’t hear it much anymore. Partly because all sayings have a shelf life and expire in our insatiable culture. But also because our methods to improve the lives of others have shifted tactics. Rather than calling people to a life of self-denial (which was how the “live simply” …

The Super Rich

There has been a lot of talk about wealth disparity in the world. The Oxfam report released just before the World Economic Forum in Davos was designed to shock the world into the realization that the top 1% own nearly half of all wealth in the world. Even though the report has flaws and critics, we can’t escape the reality that there is a huge economic gap.

Before we start sniping at the 1% club, let’s not forget some estimates indicate a person worth $500,000 is in the top 1%, though the more likely number is $750k. Obviously a high …

Online Junkyard Shopping

It’s cyber-Monday, which is a made up marketing name if there ever was one. Despite whatever cynicism you might have (and I might share with you), there is a silver lining here.

You can go shopping from Junkyard Wisdom and help some worthy students. For instance, you can follow this Amazon link to their book section (my personal favorite as you can see) and start shopping. Whatever you buy on that visit earns a few cents (or dollars or hundreds of dollars if you are a big spender) for Junkyard Wisdom.

Once you click the link you can navigate …

Traditional Thanksgiving Prayer

A prayer for your Thanksgiving Day ….

Bless, O Lord,Celtic Cross Fall Colors
this food we are about to eat;
and we pray you, O God,
that it may be good
for our body and soul;
and, if there is any poor creature
hungry or thirsty walking the road,
may God send them in to us
so that we can share the food with them,
just as Christ shares His gifts
with all of us.
Amen.

Graces, from Celtic Daily Prayer

Baptised by Blood

A few years ago I attended a gallery opening my daughter organized and was impressed with the work of Casey MacKenzie Johnson. Casey is a bundle of energy, with a touch of flamboyance and an infectious smile. In Casey’s world anything is possible, especially if she has a camera in hand. D’Aun and I purchased a beautiful and powerful photograph from her recent trip to Haiti.

Last month we were in London where Casey is now finishing her MA in Photography at the London College of Fashion. We met her on the steps of St. Paul and walked to a …

James Bond Museum, London

Last weekend D’Aun and I were walking through West End in London and came across this museum. I love museums. Always have since a child. But this one might be my favorite of all time. London James Bond Museum. Perfect. Sadly it was closed when we walked past and we left the city early the next morning. Maybe a future trip?!?
