Media Details
What we call “media” is changing these days. But if you work in some type of media, maybe you are considering me for an interview, a podcast, want me to write an article, or would even consider me as a speaker for your event. It’s also possible you’re a stalker tracking an old chubby bald guy. However you got here, this page is for you.
If you are interested in connecting with me, you can reach me at roy@junkyardwisdom.com.
Of course it’s perfectly reasonable to check out what I’m like behind a mic or on a stage or writing an article. So here is a collection of my writing, speaking, interviews, and snarky attitude. It’s not complete, but it’s a good representation.
Oh, and if you are curious about the non-flattering picture I chose for this page, it’s simple. I was in Cusco, Peru, in the second floor of a coffee shop, sitting on a balcony, and my son says, “Hey Dad, look cool for the picture!” And that’s the best I could do.
Look, I’m not a big fan of making myself look good. I don’t want to build a platform. I have never been hip. Too many public figures like to post pictures of themselves on a stage. I don’t buy into all that nonsense.
I’m average — even below average — in most ways. But I’m also funny, mostly authentic, and a good storyteller. Maybe I have what is best described as junkyard wisdom. The picture, I hope, captures my junkyard attitude toward all the crap we see from “leaders” today.
Okay, rant done, now on to the list.
Literary Stuff:
For my first and third books I worked with Deep River Books; they interviewed me here.
If you are wondering how a knucklehead like me writes so goodish, look no further than David Jacobsen.
A couple of videos:
This was a fun interview with my friend Emily Nelson. Thanks Emily!
The talk I gave for the Global Studies Fellows Program at Westmont College, my alma mater.
My volunteerism with Fuller Seminary:
Proud of my work with the De Pree Center at Fuller Seminary, and I’m part of their stable of speakers. Which makes me sound like an ass, but then even asses live in a stable.
Life for Leaders is a daily devotional email to which I contribute.
Speaking of De Pree, this was written by Mark Roberts (Executive Director of De Pree) and is absolutely my favorite review of Salvaged.
And this Conversing Podcast with Mark Labberton of Fuller Seminary was my favorite podcast conversation.
Talks and Podcasts:
Brad Formsma does a great podcast about giving, and it was an honor to be his guest.
It was an honor to preach at Living Stones Christian Church in the East Bay.
Being on Kathi Lipp’s Communicator Academy Podcast was a blast.
It was great fun to do a podcast with On the Road with Ryan Thomas.
Jake Sasseville is hilarious, and it was fun to be on his podcast.
Loved doing this podcast with Tony Campolo and Shane Claiborne.
The Ethical Storytelling Podcast, hosted by my daughter, was a highlight for me. Who wouldn’t want to have a conversation with my amazing daughter?!?! The second part of the podcast is here.
Ryan Nissley of Life 96.5 was great to work with for this radio interview.
A radio interview now podcast for CHRI Family Radio.
Articles or blogs I’ve written, plus a few interviews I’ve given:
This might be the most poignant thing I’ve written.
An article about small business I wrote for the Christian Economic Forum.
Here are two articles for Outreach Magazine. I’m partial to 6 Easy Ways to Motivate Your Team.
This article on Three Leadership Lessons was an easy one to write because it came directly from my experience in the junkyard.
Another easy article for me to write about needing friends in low places, and I laughed out loud at the biker photo the publisher used at the top.
Here’s an interview with Kathy Harris about divine detours.
I’ve written several articles for Red Letter Christians and this is my favorite.
Years ago my friend Christine Sine invited me to write a few thoughts about prayer for her blog.
Skip Vaccarello is highly regarded in Silicon Valley and he did a nice article/interview here.
Cara Meredith is an amazing thinker and writer. Honored that she’d do this short interview on Patheos.
The time Delectable featured me as one of their expert wine tasters.
Sometimes I’ve spoken at events but for whatever reason they were not recorded. Such is the case with these organizations:
Cornerstone Fellowship, Livermore. I’ve done workshops on faith and wealth for them, and was interviewed (briefly) on a Sunday morning.
Blue Oaks Church, Pleasanton. I spoke at one of their Lead seminars for lay leaders.
CityServe Tri-Valley asked me to speak at their annual banquet in 2018. A local journalist wrote about it here.
Westmont in San Francisco regularly invites me to speak about faith and vocation to the students.
Plus, I’ve spoken at various New Canaan Society meetings, Rotary Clubs, business breakfasts, and lots of mens groups. All of them have been fun.
