Leadership, Salvaged,

Leadership Style

My friend Steve Gumaer wrote, “After all these years of leading a multinational and motivated team, I have finally realized that what shapes my leadership style is not primarily context, techniques, or social recognition. It is love and the audacity to push into the world with a transforming idea lovingly and with others.”

You might remember Steve as the guest blogger a few weeks ago when he introduced us to Rose Mu. Well, Steve originally wanted to share his thoughts about my book Salvaged and put the focus on me. I refused. He persisted. I refused. He persisted.

And …

Freestarter™ Awards

Over a decade ago I invented the word “freestarter” because there was no word that quite fit the kind of person I was trying to describe. Part prophet, part entrepreneur, part artist, and part leader (often without followers) it became my own concoction of traits describing a unique individual. I wrote about them in my book Salvaged and posted a list of great Freestarters™ on my blog.

Then last year our family foundation decided to honor these Freestarters™ and give them long overdue recognition. The first four were announced in December, and we hope to honor another one every three …

Givers, Leaders, and Drinkers

Greetings from Jaguar Creek, Belize! I’m here with a dozen or so givers, leaders, and drinkers. Not necessarily in that order. The third annual Junkyard Wisdom Belize is happening and we’re having a blast talking through the challenge of being a good donor, a wise leader, and a sober … well, never mind.

Seriously though, the conversations are amazing. Most conversations about philanthropy take place in fancy hotels. Most conversations about leadership happen in large conferences or online TED Talks.

What I love about this event is we have these conversations in the rainforest of Belize, within a few …

Junkyard Wisdom Belize 3.0

Want to go to Belize with me in November? I’m heading there November 17 for a 4-day workshop focused on generosity, faith, and leadership. This is definitely not like any other trip before it! Read on for more information.

A few years ago, after the publication of my first book Junkyard Wisdom, a few friends suggested a retreat event based around the themes of the book. That led to the initial Junkyard Wisdom in Belize where we had an amazing event with twenty or so people. The next year we did it again.

This year one of my collaborators, …

Leadership, Salvaged,

Race Track Leadership

Ever hear of Race Track Leadership (RTL)? Probably not because I just made it up. But don’t tune me out just yet. It’s a pretty cool leadership concept.

A few years ago in a meeting with the executive team of an organization, strategic plans were being made for a new endeavor. As with most new endeavors, nobody knew if the plan would work. The big question in the room was, “How are we going to shift gears if this starts to fail?”

Good question! My suggestion was to think of this like a race car driver. A long time ago …

Buy a Book, Build a Leader

An acquaintance of mine asked if we are using my book Salvaged to help the new Leadership Institute at PathLight. As it turns out they are using it, and we had a fun conversation about how young leaders from a different culture might read my book.

All of which led to an exciting promotion idea this acquaintance is supporting: buy a copy of Salvaged and $50 will be donated to the PathLight Leadership Initiative. All you need to do is buy a copy of the book and forward the receipt to salvaged@pathlight.org. Then a $50 donation will be …

Input, please?

I’d love your input. If I were to lead another Junkyard Wisdom Belize trip, would you be interested? And if so, what would you like to achieve on the trip?

I’m asking because we’ve done the trip for the last two years and thinking about doing it again in 2019. Of course there needs to be strong interest to make it happen.

Check out the pictures on the website if you are curious about what we do — it’s an absolutely blast for 20-25 people.

If we do this trip I’d redo the curriculum a bit to fit my recent …

Salvaged,

Prizes!

Want to win a prize??? First, post something online with a picture of my book Salvaged and a link to the Amazon page (or any online retailer).

The post can say something about your favorite chapter.

For instance, “Loved the chapter “Bring Donuts if You’re Late” because I’m continually late!”

Or maybe, “Just read the chapter “Perfect People Make Lousy Leaders” and I could relate completely!”

But whatever you wish is fine. The chapter titles are so unique they tend to attract attention!

Second, take a screenshot of the post and send it to me. Like the one above of …
