Salvaged,

Influencers

The publisher just shipped me actual hardback copies of Salvaged!

It’s fun to have the actual book in my hand. These early books are meant for “influencers” who will tell the world how great the book is and, hopefully, drive preorders.

Can you suggest people who should get a copy? Typically, it would be people who have a large number of followers. Social media is important of course, but it could also be a journalist, pastor, or anyone who can get the word out to a large number of people.

Just a few examples:

Beth Moore, who has 877,000 …

Two Months Till Launch!

Two months till launch of my second book, Salvaged!

With just two months to go the focus now is to get as many preorders as possible because they drive those indecipherable algorithms on the bestseller lists. The more preorders we get, the higher the book moves up the sales charts. The more it moves up the charts, the more it shows up in searches and recommendations. Which means more people hear about it and buy it.

People respond to honest endorsements, so I’m hoping you can help. One authentic post from you will do more than all my posts combined. …

Junkyard Management, Leadership,

What Do You Want To Learn?

In my upcoming book Salvaged there’s a chapter focused on the power of asking good questions. A recent question I asked of a young man who wanted to be mentored is a case in point.

He’s in his mid-30’s, an intelligent guy, married with kids, doing his best to live a faithful life. There’s much to admire about this young man, and I wanted to say that up front because I’m about to make him sound really stupid.

He asked to meet with me, and the timing worked, so I agreed. Eventually, awkwardly, he got around to asking me if …

Top Ten Lists

The marketing for Salvaged will kick into gear soon, and I need your help creating a top ten leadership list. This will be a free downloadable chapter in exchange for email address, so it needs to be of real value. The title needs to grab attention, be mildly edgy, and make people smile. So I’d love your input!

An obvious example might be “Top Ten Junkyard Leadership Lessons” but that’s too broad. Worse, it’s not even funny.

So my crack marketing team (me, Anne, our golden Sammie, David, D’Aun, and our horse Smokey) have been brainstorming creative, funny, and attention …

Family,

Hair Tonic

It’s been ages since I wrote a family story. Recently I was editing my upcoming book Salvaged and a line about my shiny bald head reminded me of the time a package of hair growth tonic arrived in the mail.

It was my Senior year at Westmont College. Midyear my Dad came to visit for a weekend. We did all the stuff Westmont students do with their parents: sightseeing in Santa Barbara, going out for dinner, and conversations about the family. Then Dad headed home and my studies resumed.

About three weeks later a package arrived at the Westmont …

Salvaged,

A little help here?

Ever hear people use the phrase, “A little help here?”

Like kids playing baseball on a sandlot field, and one big kid hits the ball clear over the fence. It’s out of reach, and they have to climb the high fence or run all the way around. But one of the kids sees a passing pedestrian and pleads, “A little help here?” The ball is tossed back over the fence, everyone shouts thanks, the hero nonchalantly waves, and the game continues.

In the same way as the kids playing baseball, I could use your help, and you could be the …

Salvaged is here!

Great news about Salvaged! It’s here! My new book, Salvaged: Leadership Lessons Pulled From the Junkyard, is now available for preorder! The release is still months away, but you can be amongst the first to get the book if you order it now. This was suppose to be a summer hiatus on my blog but this is too big not to post about.
