Bangkok – First Impressions

The last 24+ hours have been spent in airports, giant aluminum tubes that fly, and traffic. But in the midst of all that … some first impressions.

Bangkok is big, busy, and tropical. The weather — even some of the architecture — reminds me of Honolulu. There’s an old feeling to the city. The people are incredibly friendly and willing to help aging white guys like me (as I was recently called by a colleague).

As with all free and globalized cities around the world, there are strong commonalities. Starbucks, Toyotas, and McDonalds are the most obvious types of things. …

Learning From the Poor, Elephant Rides, and Ranch Hands

About twelve hours from now I’ll be boarding a flight to Hong Kong, and then from there heading to Bangkok.  I’ll be connecting with my daughter Thailand.  She runs The SOLD Project, an effort in Northern Thailand that keeps kids out of the sexual slavery world.  My time will be spent learning about this filthy side of the human experience, hearing the stories of those who have been caught up in it, and reflecting on how best to respond to the social, spiritual and economic structures that allow this to happen.

I’m really looking forward to seeing Rachel in …

Family,

Christmas Letter

Dear Friends & Family,

In case you missed it in our Christmas card, I’m posting our family letter in this format as well.

For our family, memories of 2010 will revolve around Thailand.  It began in January when D’Aun joined Rachel and Kevin for a two-week tour to see the work that Rachel’s organization SOLD does in the country.  It deepened when Rachel and Kevin, not yet even married for a full year, moved to Thailand in May.  Then as autumn approached, Jedd headed to Thailand for seven weeks to help SOLD film a video.  The whole family will complete …

Family,

Happy Birthday to Me! Well, sorta …

I freely admit that I am proud of my kids.  Last Friday Jedd got home from Thailand where he lived for 7-weeks.  During his time there he worked on a film for The SOLD Project, which works to prevent child prostitution.  It’s a dynamic organization that my daughter Rachel leads as Executive Director.  She and her husband Kevin live in Thailand and are doing some great things.

So yeah, I’m proud of my kids. But what does that have to do with my birthday? Glad you asked …

It’s my birthday on December 8th. That’s the same night as …

Family,

Jedd Has Left for Thailand

Last night I dropped my son Jedd off at the airport and he headed to Thailand for seven weeks. He’s probably still in the air as I post this. D’Aun and I are excited for him, and equally excited for the great footage we’re sure he’ll create for the next SOLD Project video. He’ll be staying with Rachel and Kevin (his sister and brother-in-law), so we know he’s in good hands. We’re going to miss him, though!

There is still a bit of fundraising to do for this trip. Many of you may have received Jedd’s letter asking for support, …

Family,

My Son in Thailand

My son, Jedd, is heading to Thailand. I’ve asked him to be a guest blogger and share why he’s going and how you can help. I hope you consider supporting him in this effort because the work he’ll be doing is important. You can do so by visiting his blog, giving through The SOLD Project, or simply sending him a check (contact me for mailing information). Be sure to specify that your support is for Jedd.

Anyway, I’ll let him explain more below:
