English Classes in Thailand

The last few days have been my favorite here in Thailand. We left Chiang Mai yesterday, picked up Berkeley (my grand dog) from the kennel, and headed to Chiang Rai.

Along the way we stopped at the Chiang Rai Winery, a fascinating place off the main highway. I’ll write more about it some other time, but it was really fun to sip wines made from various fruits (no grapes in this wine). I had such low expectations, and I guess they were met, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. In fact, I bought a …

Chiang Mai

Yesterday I left Bangkok and arrived in the northern city of Chiang Mai. What a difference a few hundred miles makes! Where Bangkok is huge, noisy, often dirty, and yet stunningly beautiful in places, Chiang Mai feels like a college town. Rachel and Kevin compare it to Berkeley (though with better Thai food).

Despite the allure of the town, our first stop yesterday broke some of the charm. Chiang Mai has a large and growing prostitution industry. We went to the Volunteers for Children Development Foundation’s drop-in center for street children. These children are homeless and without families, and they …

Learning From the Poor, Elephant Rides, and Ranch Hands

About twelve hours from now I’ll be boarding a flight to Hong Kong, and then from there heading to Bangkok.  I’ll be connecting with my daughter Thailand.  She runs The SOLD Project, an effort in Northern Thailand that keeps kids out of the sexual slavery world.  My time will be spent learning about this filthy side of the human experience, hearing the stories of those who have been caught up in it, and reflecting on how best to respond to the social, spiritual and economic structures that allow this to happen.

I’m really looking forward to seeing Rachel in …

Family, Blogging, and Links

I have several links for you to click today…trust me, you’ll have fun with this…

A lot of people who read this blog were supporters of my son when he went to Thailand last year. Jedd was there to create a video for The SOLD Project, which combats child prostitution in that country. Well, here’s the awesome news: Jedd was given the Volunteer Service Award by the Bay Area Professional Videographers Association!

What this means is that his work was so good it deserved recognition. And it means that those of you supported him are seeing great dividends because …

Family,

Happy Birthday to Me! Well, sorta …

I freely admit that I am proud of my kids.  Last Friday Jedd got home from Thailand where he lived for 7-weeks.  During his time there he worked on a film for The SOLD Project, which works to prevent child prostitution.  It’s a dynamic organization that my daughter Rachel leads as Executive Director.  She and her husband Kevin live in Thailand and are doing some great things.

So yeah, I’m proud of my kids. But what does that have to do with my birthday? Glad you asked …

It’s my birthday on December 8th. That’s the same night as …

Family,

Jedd Has Left for Thailand

Last night I dropped my son Jedd off at the airport and he headed to Thailand for seven weeks. He’s probably still in the air as I post this. D’Aun and I are excited for him, and equally excited for the great footage we’re sure he’ll create for the next SOLD Project video. He’ll be staying with Rachel and Kevin (his sister and brother-in-law), so we know he’s in good hands. We’re going to miss him, though!

There is still a bit of fundraising to do for this trip. Many of you may have received Jedd’s letter asking for support, …

Family,

My Son in Thailand

My son, Jedd, is heading to Thailand. I’ve asked him to be a guest blogger and share why he’s going and how you can help. I hope you consider supporting him in this effort because the work he’ll be doing is important. You can do so by visiting his blog, giving through The SOLD Project, or simply sending him a check (contact me for mailing information). Be sure to specify that your support is for Jedd.

Anyway, I’ll let him explain more below:
