Harvest Photos

This is our first harvest here in our new vineyard home. Seems appropriate to share these photos, plus one short video at the end (which is hard to see…sorry!). The work started in the late afternoon and continued throughout the evening.

Finally, here’s a 12-second video. It’s not much…taken with just an iPhone, from a distance, at night. But it gives you some idea of the noise and energy happening in the vineyard. If you subscribe to this blog via email and can’t see it, just click here to watch.

Vineyard Harvest

It’s almost harvest time! Our vineyard manager says “late next week” should be perfect. This is our first harvest since moving to our new home, and we look forward to seeing the process begin. The Chardonnay is looking good this year, and the brix level is 22-23 depending on where and when you test it. So not only are the grapes tasting wonderful, there appears to be an above average yield.

Below are a few pictures you might enjoy.…

Let’s Throw A Party

Loved this devotional from the August 17th entry of Celtic Daily Prayer:

Matthew had met Jesus and wanted all his friends to meet the Master too. What could he do? He could do the one thing he really knew how to do well — he could throw a party. People always enjoyed his parties. So he threw a big party and invited everybody — Jesus could do the rest.

Why can we not just do the same —  lay aside time-consuming religious activities, and spend time with people we like, instead?

Garage Full of Books

I’m hoping D’Aun will let me paint our garage door like this one. Then again, maybe not. But you gotta admit it’s pretty creative!

With thanks to Robert Crais for posting this on his Facebook page. Crais is one of my favorite authors of private detective fiction, and I’ve reviewed a couple of his books here. …

You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?

Most of us have heard, “They can talk the talk, but can they walk the walk?”  In other words, talk is cheap and results are the real way to judge. Those who merely talk are hypocrites.

The phrase implies it’s easier and more common to talk the talk than walk the walk. Flash is easier to achieve than substance.

But I’m not so sure that is true. At least not in the non-profit world. It seems to me there are far more people walking the walk than talking the talk.

I know a lot of people who are doing great …

The New Cultural Arrogance

Some of my recent reading has been by authors in the New Atheists camp. You know, all those bestselling authors who love trying to dismantle Christianity and other faiths. They’ve grown highly recognized in the last decade or so.

Reading the arguments put forth by the critics of my faith sharpens my own thinking. There are several authors who make strong arguments. I don’t agree with the arguments, but they are well thought out and presented without a lot of emotional angst or condescending insults. They are well worth reading.

Sadly, there are some who are total nut cases. They …

The Man in the White Suit

Okay, I admit it, I’m a huge fan of the BBC show Top Gear. Maybe it’s for middle aged guys who fantasize about driving like Mario Andretti, but it is one of the few shows that makes me laugh out loud. As you can see in the photo on the right, I even have a Stig t-shirt (thank you, D’Aun, for the awesome Father’s Day gift).

You might be asking, “Who or what is the Stig?” Glad you asked. Top Gear is a show about cars, so they take cars onto their test track for timed laps. They want …
